I bumped into Kelvin at Pacific Plaza today. Kelvin, one of my best friends from Primary school whom I had lost contact with since the secondary school days.
Maybe it's just me and my short-term memory, but whenever I meet a friend whom I've not seen for a long long time, I always find myself thinking of a certain moment way back when, as if that is the key I need to unlock this someone again for me. You know, when you meet an old friend and then , to your slight distress, find that it has been so long that you need reminding who this allegedly super-duper good friend actually is, who he is to you, even though he is standing next to you and already chatting away. You need a point of focus, a souvenior of their reality.
So here is my secret key, my private continuity clip of Kelvin, quite possibly the oldest friend I have.
It was the 2nd semester of 1991.(primary 3) We (the guys in our class) used to play soccer ( actually it's kicking empty drink cans in the basketball court ) during recess breaks and one fine day, Kelvin fainted during the assembly after the break and ended up at the sick bay. It wasn't that I volunteered or what, but since I sat beside Kelvin in class, it was by default that the form teacher will get me to pack his bag and bring it down to the sick bay and accompany him till his mum comes and pick him up. So I guess that's when he and his mum got a pretty good impression of me and that's how we ended up the best of friends in primary school!
And to cut a short story even shorter, it was certainly nice seeing him after all these years and although we didn't talk much, I guess I will never forget him and those primary school friends, who were like people from my own private Lost World, the only time where we were truly young and innocent.
We were the Famous Five. We were the Secret Seven. Or in today's context, the Harry Potters... suddenly off on Adventures again, feeling that strange rush of expectation that comes when you have absolutely no idea what's going to happen next except that its going to happen with your irrational, misfit, unbreakable group of friends.
