The taiwan tonner that was provided to us for transportation, to put it nicely, very fucked up. Ancient, arcane, watever, these trucks were prob used since the Vietnam war. Puffing and grumbling, the trip was hell for us.
To make matters worse, the brakes turned out to be faulty. Everytime the driver jams the brakes, it screeches and white fumes sputter out. And to spice things up a little, we happen to be in the middle of an expressway.. We were pretty screwed, i thought.
This was pretty much like a scene out of the movie 'Speed', except that the driver looked scrawnier than Sandra Bullock and there was no Keanu Reeves ( aka 'the one' or 'the one without facial expressions') to save us.
In the end the driver had the presence of mind to swerve to the grass patch to slow the tonner to a halt. I was certain this impressive manoeuve would have made Mr keanu reeves go 'woah'.
As the driver tries to restart the engine and test the brakes, smoke starts to fill the air around us. Suddenly i heard my friend shouting.. 'Get off the tonner! The wheel is on fire!! '
We haven't slept much for the last 4 days since outfield training began. But the shouts of fire jolted us into action. The 15 odd guys in the tonner got our heavy asses off the chairs , grabbed our stuff, made our way out of the rather small opening in roughly 1.5 seconds. My OC would have been greatly impressed.
In a rather desperate attempt to put out the fire, we used the water from our waterbags to spray at the fire. Even a half filled coke bottle was splashed on the wheels. Although the tonner moved into the field, the rear end was still protruding out in the filter lane. The steady line of vehicles forming behind us showed their concern and consideration by sounding their horns in unison. Bunch of pricks! If only i had a flame thrower in my hands....
